News Mandela family lashes out at 'misuse' of name Photo: INLSA July 18, 2008 Edition 2 Andisiwe Makinana Nelson Mandela's grandson, Chief Zwelivelile (Mandla) Mandela, has lashed out at people who misuse the Mandela name. And he cautioned against expectations that his grandfather would attend the many events organised to celebrate his 90th birthday around Mthatha this weekend. In an exclusive interview with the Cape Argus in Mvezo yesterday, the chief spoke of a worrying trend that saw independent entities organising events using the Mandela name. He said the family had organised one function only - the private event featuring state dignitaries and former struggle heroes at the Mandela family home in Qunu tomorrow. Mandela said the family had started preparations for this day, using its own fundraisers, immediately after last year's birthday celebrations. "As a Mandela family, we are not doing anything else outside what's happening at our home. But we find our name being used. There are people who claim to be speaking on behalf of the family," he said. "We can't stop people from celebrating Madiba's legacy … but not in our name." Mandela, in the presence of about 30 villagers gathered at his home in Mvezo, explained that the family was worried because "there were funds involved". In these cases, he said, organisers needed to be clear in their marketing of events that Nelson Mandela was not directly involved and, if funds were being raised, to where that money would be channelled. He explained that the family wanted to bring Madiba, who arrived in Qunu on Wednesday evening with his wife, Graça Machel, back to his homestead for this year's birthday, to celebrate with the people "who shaped him". These included people with whom he grew up, those with him in the struggle, at Robben Island and then later in Parliament. Among the guests expected at tomorrow's private function were President Thabo Mbeki, Deputy-President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, ANC president Jacob Zuma, members of the ANC's national executive committee and Cabinet ministers.
