Former Observer editor Roger Alton is understood to be in talks to replace Kelner as the Independent's editor."A new managing director will be announced shortly who will be responsible for exciting new initiatives which will take the title into a significant new phase in its history," Fallon said.Barnes is leaving the company after four years, during which time he achieved double-digit growth, INM said."Simon has done a superb job for the Independent, capitalising on the success of the compact and translating it into higher and more solidly based advertising revenues," said Fallon."At a time when many newspapers have seen either static or negative growth, the Independent has grown its revenues substantially and we are very grateful for the job he has done.
